VIN vs Rego search
VIN vs Registration Number search – What Should I Use for a PPSR Check?
When performing a PPSR (Personal Property Securities Register) check on a car, we strongly recommend using the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) instead of the registration number.
Why Use the VIN?
- More Accurate Results: The VIN is a unique 17-character code assigned to every vehicle. Unlike number plates, it never changes — no matter what state the car is registered in.
- Plates Can Change, VINs Don’t: Registration numbers can be updated, transferred, or reused. VINs stay with the vehicle for life.
- Recommended by the Official PPSR: Searching by VIN gives the most reliable data and helps you avoid errors or mismatched results.
Where to Find the VIN:
You can find the VIN:
- On the compliance plate (usually under the bonnet or inside the driver’s door)
- On registration papers
- On insurance documents
